How to measure roller blinds

All measurements should be to the nearest mm. Decide where you will fit your roller blind. The mechanism can sit inside the window recess, as long as there is sufficient room above the windows to locate the mechanism whilst still allowing the windows to open. Alternatively the mechanism can be located on the window frame itself or above the window frame.

Blind Width:

  • Blind to fit inside window recess:
  • Measure the inside of the recess (distance A) in three places: top, middle and bottom, giving us the narrowest width. Confirm your measurement as recess width, and we will make appropriate deductions from the width, to allow operation of the blind without the edges of the blind touching the wall when it is pulled up or down. Please confirm this measurement as recess dimensions.
  • Blind to fit on the window frame itself/outside recess:
  • Measure the full width of the window frame, or if the window is bordered by an architrave, take your measurements from either the inside or outside of the architrave (see diagram below). Whilst this is obviously a matter of personal preference, for practical and aesthetic reasons we recommend that you take your measurements from the inside of the architrave. We will make the roller blind to these exact dimensions.

Alternatively if there is no frame or architrave, add a further 4 to 7cm either side (distances B). Ideally for aesthetic reasons, distance B should not be greater than the width of the window sill outside the recess (distance C). Please confirm this measurement as blind dimensions.

Blind Drop:
Measure from the top of where you will place the roller blind mechanism i.e. full length of the recess (distance D) or the full length of the window frame. If the window is bordered by an architrave take your measurements from the inside or outside of the architrave. If there is no frame or architrave, add your desired length above the window (distance E) to distance D.

The blind drop is not as crucial as the width as roller blind manufacturers will typically build in some tolerance to ensure that the roller blind at least covers the mechanism when fully lowered.
